Best Embroidery File Formats

What form of artwork do you prefer? Embroidery designs come in a lot of different file formats, after you have bought your private embroidery machine, sooner or later, you're going to want to create an embroidery project that requires something different. The Internet is the most common place to find or download embroidery designs. You will need an appropriate software in order to transfer the design files from your computer to the embroidery machine.

There are many websites where you can purchase embroidery designs and download them directly to your computer. Most sites have free designs you can try. The computer processes the artwork from any embroidery files that the machine can understand. The good news is you can be embroidered any design files format, but first it needs to be converted into a format that is accepted and readable by the embroidery machine. That conversion process is called "digitizing".  

After few years spent on exploration, a good embroidery file format includes a vector description of each design part and attaches abstract stitching information to that object. The reason for this is because any artwork file provided for embroidery has to go through an additional process called digitizing. This conversion process takes the artwork from a format for the computer and turns it into a file that the embroidery machine can read and then use as instruction for the stitching, the digitized file tells the embroidery machine where, how and which colors to use while stitching. Unfortunately the digitizing process itself is often a very time consuming thing. For that reason it is best to place your order and download the embroidery design file format that matches to your machine.

The most popular rather machine-specific format seems to be *.PES (Brother) since it also includes worker information. Less powerful formats are directly stitch-based. Another embroidery formats seem to be DST and EXP also popular. The DST by Tajima is the universal embroidery file format, it is mean, DST files can be read by all embroidery machines, but these are not necessarily the best. 

DST's are stitches only and reshaping is not always possible, because it's limited and editing functions can be poor, plus resizing of a DST is very dangerous as it will simply bunch the stitches and not reprocess the stitches like it will in a EMB file. EMB format is vector-based artwork, this files can be transformed without deforming stitches.  

Wilcom embroidery software has the technology where it attempts to re-trace a .DST file and turn it into an outline file, but it will not give you as good quality as if it was an original .EMB file. Keep your file in .EMB though as this is a true embroidery object file. If possible ask your design supplier for a .EMB file. It will save you a lot of time and money when editing is concerned. 

You can convert your *.DST file extension if you have the right software. Wilcom Truesizer  e2 software able to reading or writing of DST files. You need to download and learn your free wilcom TrueSizer software. The golden rule is always keep the machine embroidery design in .EMB file and only make a stitch file such as .DST to send to the machine. Any editing should be done on the .EMB file and then re-saved embroidery design as a .DST only if needed.

You can download embroidery designs, by finding a site or source that provides these designs, the Internet provides access to millions of embroidery designs, some designs are free and others are available for purchase. Before downloading designs for your embroidery machine is make sure that the websites you are using offer designs in a format that works for your machine and available in a size that your embroidery machine. The file extension for your specific machine can be helpful if you choose not to convert formats. Although your format is not shown, just choose another main format like EMB or PES and use a free conversion software to convert to the format you need. 

There are different conversion programs available like BuzzTools (Download free 21 days trial version), Embird (Use of demo version is limited to 30 days or 100 runs) and Wilcom Truesizer e2 (Download Free Software) which can convert to and from many different embroidery formats and it is possible to re-size designs with certain software. Wilcom TrueSizer e2 is a universal file conversion tool, get free and without any regulations and limitations embroidery converter for windows. Wilcom TrueSizer e2 compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7and Windows 8. 

How to Convert Embroidery Designs

• To convert files to another format in Wilcom TrueSizer do the following steps:
• Run Wilcom Truesizer e2, when the pop-up window appears, just give it about a few seconds to load, you don't need to click anything, it's just an ad, then press ESC. The pop-up window will go away, and TrueSizer will appear. 
• Select File > Open. The Open dialog box will appear.

• From the "Files of Type" dropdown list at the bottom select the format of the original file. Otherwise use that pull down menu to pick "All Files". If you don't pick all files then only the type that you picked will show up. 
• Browse to the location of the file and select the design to be converted by clicking on it . 
• Click Open to open the embroidery file.
• Go to "Save as". The box will open in the middle of the screen again and you go to the bottom pull down menu that says "Save as type".

• From the "Save as type" dropdown list at the bottom select the format that you want to convert. Pick and click on your desired format such as Brother .PES. You may change the file's name in the box provided.

• Then click "Save". You can save to a different destination by changing the location at the top of the box before you click save. 
• In the "Object Properties" window, you can enter the size change you wish in the "Dimensions" area. Enter either a percentage on the right, or a size measurement on the left.

• Click Save. You may change the embroidery file's name in the box provided.
• Your file will now be saved in the required format. Once the designs have converted, load onto your machine and start embroidering.

To download your free Wilcom TrueSizer, log into the EmbroideryStartup.com website, and click the menu item Free Stuff > TrueSizer. You might need to register first if you haven't already. Download and install the Wilcom Truesizer e2 software on your computer.

The extension PES is a Brother Embroidery Format.  If your Brother embroidery machine has a USB connection, simply save the newly created design onto a memory stick and insert it into the machine. You don't need to have the machine and the computer in the same room. Remember, almost every embroidery machine manufacturer uses their own particular file format,The embroidery design in PES file type is primarily associated with 'Brother/Babylock/Bernina' embroidery machine. PES V4 works with Brother Ultima, Innovis, Galaxi 3000 and Babylock Ellageo. Please make sure you have the embroidery machine listed with each free embroidery design format that you downloaded.

How to convert machine embroidery design using free wilcom embroidery software : Truziser

Below are Instructions to convert with Wilcom Software Truesizer. This free software able to opens and converts to EXP, DST, EMB, TAP, TOYOTA, BARUDAN, Brother, JEF, SEW, HUS, PES, PEC, PCS, PCD, CSD.

1. Run Wilcom TrueSizer 
2. When you save an free embroidery design from EMB, the selection for PES is present. 
3. Click on the open folder icon on upper left corner of the screen below the "W".
4. On the window that opens, first you have the usual look in blank field with the little arrow that is where you go search for the folder in which the design is then the big white space below is the design files that should appear there. If none of your files shows at this time, underneath you have file name and file type, click on the arrow of file name and select all files and all the design files in that folder will show.
5. Select the design to be converted by clicking on it once and then click 'open'
6. Now with the design open, click on 'File', upper left corner of screen 
7. Click 'Save As'
8. On the opening window, click on 'File Type' and select the desired format and then click 'Save'.

In my experience on home embroidery markets, some computeraized machine need different PES design format. I find that I need to save embroidery design to an earlier version of PES for those customers to be able to use the files they have to cure the PES version issue for most home based embroidery customers. You simply select the PES format from your drop down list. Wilcom prompts you to save the file and opens a second box for you to choose the PES version. And I let Wilcom's hoop management to select the hoop size for the design as digitized and then choose PES 4.0 as my default level. 

Otherwise you can visit an embroidery designs  online conversion tool to convert embroidery design for your computeraized embroidery machine. You only needed to Sign up for a free account on Embroidery Designs sites. You must have an account in order to use their online conversion tool.

1. Go to the Embroidery Designs Online Conversion Tool 
2. Click the "Choose File" button.
3. Double-click on the file you wish to convert. It must be one of the following file formats: DAT, DSB, DST, EMD, EXP, EXY, HUS, JEF, KSM,PCM, PCQ, PCS, PEC, SEW, STX, TAP, VIP, XXX or ZSK.
4. Click the "Upload File" button.
5. Choose "Brother, Babylock, Bernina,  (PES) " from the drop-down list.
6. Click the "Convert Now" button.
7. Click the download icon to save your new PES file to your computer.

To install the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite Embroidery Effect, download the plug in file onto your system by saving it to your hard drive. Converter software between various file formats exists, however depending on your sewing machine you will have to make an effort for finding the right tool. How those stitches are programmed determine the quality of the design.  I suggest finding out what embroidery software is produced by the company providing the converter. This free embrioidery digitizing recommended to technical people despite its ads and its complicated installation/permanent renewal procedure. The program may have a learning curve that is too steep for people not familiar with complex design software like Wilcom Embroidery/Decosudio. 

Threadworks is a  free digitizing program for embroidery machines. The download files comes as a small zip archive and only needs to be extracted in a directory and only includes 4 files, i.e. no installation is needed on Win 7 64-bit . Click on thre3.exe to run. Download Threadworks free digitizing software to learning how embroidery and stitching works. The program works with forms and auto-adapted stitches, display and operations are fairly close to stitching level.

Embroidery software programs vary in the level of user involvement required to transform artwork to stitches.  Some digitizing software offers automatic digitizing features while other programs give the user more freedom by manually digitizing the design.  Many programs offer both features. If you just use a digitizer to translate letters from a vector file you likely will get bad results, since the filling algorithm is not optimized for lettering. Complete embroidery suites, can create sophisticated drawings (vector based embroidery, VBE) and support all the design stages.
