Best Embroidery File Formats

What form of artwork do you prefer? Embroidery designs come in a lot of different file formats, after you have bought your private embroidery machine, sooner or later, you're going to want to create an embroidery project that requires something different. The Internet is the most common place to find or download embroidery designs. You will need an appropriate software in order to transfer the design files from your computer to the embroidery machine.

There are many websites where you can purchase embroidery designs and download them directly to your computer. Most sites have free designs you can try. The computer processes the artwork from any embroidery files that the machine can understand. The good news is you can be embroidered any design files format, but first it needs to be converted into a format that is accepted and readable by the embroidery machine. That conversion process is called "digitizing".  

After few years spent on exploration, a good embroidery file format includes a vector description of each design part and attaches abstract stitching information to that object. The reason for this is because any artwork file provided for embroidery has to go through an additional process called digitizing. This conversion process takes the artwork from a format for the computer and turns it into a file that the embroidery machine can read and then use as instruction for the stitching, the digitized file tells the embroidery machine where, how and which colors to use while stitching. Unfortunately the digitizing process itself is often a very time consuming thing. For that reason it is best to place your order and download the embroidery design file format that matches to your machine.

The most popular rather machine-specific format seems to be *.PES (Brother) since it also includes worker information. Less powerful formats are directly stitch-based. Another embroidery formats seem to be DST and EXP also popular. The DST by Tajima is the universal embroidery file format, it is mean, DST files can be read by all embroidery machines, but these are not necessarily the best. 

DST's are stitches only and reshaping is not always possible, because it's limited and editing functions can be poor, plus resizing of a DST is very dangerous as it will simply bunch the stitches and not reprocess the stitches like it will in a EMB file. EMB format is vector-based artwork, this files can be transformed without deforming stitches.  

Wilcom embroidery software has the technology where it attempts to re-trace a .DST file and turn it into an outline file, but it will not give you as good quality as if it was an original .EMB file. Keep your file in .EMB though as this is a true embroidery object file. If possible ask your design supplier for a .EMB file. It will save you a lot of time and money when editing is concerned. 

You can convert your *.DST file extension if you have the right software. Wilcom Truesizer  e2 software able to reading or writing of DST files. You need to download and learn your free wilcom TrueSizer software. The golden rule is always keep the machine embroidery design in .EMB file and only make a stitch file such as .DST to send to the machine. Any editing should be done on the .EMB file and then re-saved embroidery design as a .DST only if needed. 

Free Embroidery Effect Plugin Software

Creating embroidery stitch patterns with CorelDRAW is a very popular use for those in the garment fashion world. The DRAWings Embroidery Effect instantly converts any graphic into an image and create the unique and eye-catching look of embroidery, without having to sew a single stitch that looks like it has been created with real stitches. The DRAWings Embroidery Effect plug in enables to create raster images with the look of embroidery that can be printed out for a variety of projects including garments, promotional items, marketing materials, or signs. The DRAWings Embroidery Effect  is a free plugin software.

To convert any vector/bitmap graphic into an embroidery-like image in quickly and easily using DRAWings Embroidery Effect follows these steps below:

• Run DRAWings Embroidery Effect from its shortcut in the Start menu.
• Select Start>All Programs> DRAWings Embroidery Effect>DRAWings Embroidery Effect.
• Click on the “Import file” button and import a Vector or Bitmap graphic file. Then Click on “Export to file” button and specify the location and the file type of the DRAWings Embroidery Effect image that will be produced.

In the start-up dialog of DRAWings Embroidery Effect that will appear you can import Vector or Bitmap graphic files and apply the Embroidery Effect on them. The result will be saved on a bitmap file which you can then use as you wish. Note that it does not realy creating an actual stitch pattern for embroidery. To install the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite Embroidery Effect, download the plug in file onto your system by saving it to your hard drive. Try using the link above or  here for free download. Double-click the installer file. After you install the Plugin instead of Standalone version, it would reside under the effect menu, see the picture below.

To start creating embroidered results select the vector or bitmap image to be edited. A bitmap image will return a cross-stitched look while a vector graphic will return an embroidered look.

• Choose the "Embroidery Effect" option from the Effects menu.
• Set your preferred DPI value and fabric type settings.
• Click "OK" for instant, impressive results! Your embroidered image will appear in your CorelDRAW workspace on top of the original graphic.

DRAWings Embroidery Effect can be used in combination with as plug-in of the CorelDRAW X3 graphics software. After you have installed free DRAWings Embroidery Effect on your computer you can run it either as a stand-alone application or from within your copy of CorelDRAW X3 edition. For another option that has some capabilities similar to Embroidery Effect from what I understand to download. It is free wilcom software called Wilcom TrueSizer.

Must Do Before Install Wilcom Embroidery Software

Wilcom are pioneers of embroidery software. For anyone who has been involved with the embroidery industry must know Wilcom ES Software and how to install it on the computer. There are few thing You should check before install Wilcom embroidery software. 

Make sure that your computer specifications meet the minimum recommendation. nVidia nForce motherboards is not fully compatible with security dongle. USB Dongles are available for ES Designer 8 onwards and some Laptops have insufficient power output through their parallel port to support the parallel port dongle reliably, especially if a printer is also plugged into the port via the dongle. You should test for suitability before purchase. 

There is currently no ES Designer version that can run under the MAC OS/Apple Computers, but if you have an Intel-based MAC, you can run bootcamp and run Microsoft Windows. Simply install ES under your Windows partition. To run Wilcom ES on an Intel Mac you can Download bootcamp here. When you download Bootcamp and install it on your Mac, it will prompt you to insert a CD so it can write a CD with all the drivers you need for Windows. Leopard OS is include bootcamp so you won't have to download it separately.

For full compatibility with Vista, ES Designer 2006 with Vista Update or Service Pack 4 or higher is needed.Wilcom ES Designer is compatible with Windows 7. 

If your Wicom ES is not compatible on Windows 7, You might try Compatibilty mode and see that will help to get your software up and running. Use the following steps:

1. Right click on the Program
2. Click on Properties
3. Click on Compatibility tab
4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select Windows Vista or whatever operating system the program was running successfully. 

By default most personal firewall software will request permission to allow access for the HASP Licence Manager the first time it is run. If access is allowed there will be no problems.  If access is denied you will encounter communication problems. With Error Messages e.g, 

• "Unable to access HASP SRM Run-Time Environment (H0033)", 
• “ES.exe stopped working”,
• “Cannot load c:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio_e1.5\BIN\product.dll”,
• ”Couldn’t load the dll ‘libintf.dll”  when starting Wilcom Design Explorer.

There are many types of personal firewall software. To resolve such problems either turn off the Windows Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware applications that are installed on the computer before instaling Wilcom embroidery software.  Check  out your personal firewall software. 

After Successful instalation go to Firewall/Antivirus setting then choose exclude Wilcom embroidery program by file/folder path or Exclude by extension. Read also here to install wilcom 2006 on windows 7 use Free Multikey.

I will show you how to clean install  Wilcom  Embroidery Software 2006  on Windows  7  using Free Multikey. If you need to install wilcom for windows xp 32bit you can easily find it's manual on the internet. Just type 'install wilcom sp2' on your search engine. If you need it for Vista or 7 32bit  you can also find it, look for wilcom sp4. And if you need it for 64bit, I'll show it.  

Embroidery Software Wilcom ES Version 9 and below have not been officially tested under 64-bit operating systems. Wilcom ES 2006 (with Service Pack 4 Revision 2) and above will run on 64-bit operating systems such as Windows XP x64 and Windows Vista 64-bit as these operating systems can still run 32-bit applications natively. 

I tried a lot of different things. I'm not an expert computer, that is why sometimes i didn't know what exactly I did. First, that you must understand is Wilcom does not say their product work on Win 7 x64, just x86 only! They said:  "Users of 64-bit Operating Systems please note: ES Version 9 and below have not been officially tested under 64-bit operating systems. ES 2006 (with Service Pack 4 Revision 2) and above will run on 64-bit operating systems such as Windows XP x64 and Windows Vista 64-bit as these operating systems can still run 32-bit applications natively. Note that some Windows Server x64 operating systems running on 64-bit CPUs are not able to run 32-bit applications like Wilcom ES 2006 without hardware emulation. Microsoft Vista For full compatibility with Vista, ES Designer 2006 with Vista Update or Service Pack 4 or higher is needed. "

If you try to  install  Wilcom  Embroidery Software 2006  on Windows  7  using Free Multikey on a PC already installed another version of Wilcom, from the few times I have  done experiments always fail when the application is run. I will not discuss it. It is clean Install, please use fresh PC.

To Instal Wilcom  Embroidery Software 2006 on Windows 7 use Free Multikey please follow these steps bellow for  :

• Install the HASP driver v5.22 in HASP4_driver directory due to instructions from the downloaded package. 
• Install Wilcom ES-2006. After the installation is complete, the setup window will display the message "PC must reboot", after you click "Finish" button the computer will reboot automatically.
• Run Wilcom ES Service Pack4 Revision 2 file until finish installation then the computer will reboot automatically or you do reboot manually 
• Then merge 57FD245C.reg with the registry, by double click on the file and it will ask if you want to add, click yes. (due to instructions from the downloaded package)
• Download Multikeyemu-V0.18.0.3. Use folder MultiKey64 from the package. Don`t install it now.
• Download Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider 1.3b which allows you to install and load unsigned drivers dynamically on your Windows 7. You should start it, Enable 'Test Mode', then Sign a system file and insert the name and full path to your MultiKey.sys from the folder MultiKey64 (please see step 5). 
• To check if the file signed now, right click on MultiKey.sys, Properties and the second tab  (there should be Digital signatures). 
• In Multikey folder execute "install.cmd". You should get a message in dos window: " Driver Installed Sucessfully", then check it by go to Device manager -> If System Devices there was yellow exclamation mark -- Windows cannot verify the digital signature (Code 52). Disable driver signature enforcement by press F8 and choose "disable driver signature enforcement". After that yellow exclamation mark disappeared. Restart you PC. DON'T updated automatically from the Internet, turn off Internet and make sure you don`t update drivers, (just skip it)
• Finished

You don't need to use the included EMU. Its only the V1.8.0.2 Version. You can use the widely available V1.8.0.3 Version, because there is a 64Bit Version available for that Version. It works pretty well. You could use then Wilcom on a 64 Bit OS. But you should read the guides to make the Multikey EMU work on 64 Bit. You have to pay if you're using the newest Multikey, use Multikey Version1.8.0.3 x64, it's free of charge, e.g multikey, alladin etc. Use this Tool to sign the multikey.sys driver file after installing Free MultiKey x64, the file is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\multikey.sys

If you don't sign the file, windows won't let you install the driver unsigned. You need to be in test mode if you want using signed this way driver. 

It has many advantages and improvements that do not bring previous versions, starting as for example in the Embroidery Software Wilcom 9, the properties of an object were converted into a floating menu where if you closed that window, and did not see the properties, with the Wilcom 2006, these properties are fixed and integrated in the right side of the screen and it has is that when you leave the design drawing lines, you appeared all in black, with this package that went up, drawing lines are the color of the object according to your design, so it is easier to identify which is the object that you modify the other hand both crack as a program I've felt more stable, not so easy to damage the crack to make a mistake causes you Wilcom, these are some of the differences you'll find with Embroidery Software Wilcom 2006
